How to earn mentions on the sites AI actually trusts

By John Masajo · Published August 3, 2026 · 3 min read

If AI answers are assembled from sources the model trusts, then off-page work has a sharper target than it used to. The job is no longer just earning links. It is getting your brand onto the specific sites an AI leans on when it answers questions in your niche.

What the pattern looks like

Semrush's work on how brands earn AI visibility surfaced a clear tell. A brand like Patagonia picks up tens of thousands of AI mentions not mainly through its own pages, but through third-party sites, community platforms, review sites, and retailers that talk about it. AI trusts corroboration. When several independent, respected sources say the same thing about a brand, the model treats that brand as a safe answer.

How prospecting changes

Classic link prospecting asks one question: who has authority and relevance in my space. The AI-era version adds a second: which sources does AI already cite when it answers questions in my category. Those cited domains are your priority list, because a mention there does double duty, it reaches real readers and it feeds the exact sources the machine is reading.

The simplest way to find them

Ask the AI. Take the real questions your customers ask, run them through ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google's AI Mode, and note which sources get cited in the answers. That citation list is your target map, built from the machine's own behaviour rather than a guess. Do it across a dozen core questions and the same trusted domains start repeating. Those repeats are where you focus.

What to earn there

Not only links. Depending on the source, the win might be an honest review, an inclusion in a comparison or roundup, an expert quote, or a genuine presence in a community discussion. The point is corroboration from independent sources, which is the signal that moves AI trust. A link is welcome, but the mention itself is doing work now.

The guardrail

Earn it, do not fake it. Google's 2026 guidance explicitly warns against seeding inauthentic mentions across forums and blogs, and manufactured reviews or planted posts get discounted and carry real risk. The mentions that move AI visibility are the ones you genuinely earned on sources that already hold trust. Faking the signal is the fastest way to lose it.

The prospecting question quietly changed from "who will link to me" to "which sources does AI trust, and how do I earn a real place on them." Answer that honestly, and you start showing up where the answers actually get written.

Earned placement on the sources people and machines trust is what my portfolio is built on.
