FAQ
Off-page SEO, explained
What is off-page SEO?
Everything you do off your own site to build authority: earning backlinks, growing referring domains, digital PR, brand mentions, and directory and citation listings. It shapes how much the rest of the web, and search engines, trust you.
On-page, off-page, technical: what is the difference?
On-page is what sits on your pages (content, titles, structure, internal links). Off-page is what others say about you (links, mentions, PR). Technical is whether the site can be crawled and loads fast. You need all three; off-page is the one I specialize in.
Do backlinks still matter in 2026?
Yes. Search engines still treat quality links as votes of confidence, and they remain the most direct lever on rankings. They also feed how AI systems decide which sources to trust and cite. They are one layer of authority now rather than the whole story, but far from dead.
What makes a backlink actually good?
Relevance and genuine authority over raw numbers. A link from a respected, topically relevant site that chose to link to you editorially is worth more than dozens of low-quality or paid ones, which get devalued or penalized over time.
Are paid links or link farms worth it?
No. They break Google's guidelines, get devalued or penalized, and often have to be disavowed later. Earned editorial links are slower to build but hold up through algorithm updates. The shortcut costs more than it saves.
What is digital PR, and why does it matter?
Earning coverage by giving publications something worth writing about, original data, expert commentary, a timely angle, so the link comes as a natural result. It is now rated the most effective link-building tactic because it produces the editorial links search engines trust.
How long does off-page SEO take to work?
Not overnight. Expect early movement on referring domains and rankings within the first weeks to a couple of months, with meaningful compounding by month three to six. Anyone promising first-month organic results is overselling.
Does off-page SEO still matter with AI search?
More than ever, in a different way. AI answers favor sources that are authoritative and widely mentioned across trusted sites, which is exactly what off-page work builds. Being cited by AI increasingly depends on links, mentions, and reputation.
How should off-page results be measured?
By referring domains and their quality, not vanity link counts. Done honestly, figures are scoped to the engagement window, deduplicated, with sister-site cross-links and auto-generated links stripped out. Be wary of anyone reporting big totals they cannot break down.
