Do backlinks still matter in 2026? An honest answer.

Every few years someone declares backlinks dead. In 2026 the claim wears a new outfit: "AI does not use links, so links do not matter anymore." As someone who builds them for a living, I would tell you the same thing whether it helped my case or not, and the honest answer is more useful than a yes or a no.

For Google, links still carry real weight

Nothing in the last year changed the fundamentals here. Links remain the most direct and measurable lever you have on organic rankings. The 2026 core updates continued to reward authority and sideline thin, derivative sites, and authority is still built in large part through who links to you. If your goal is to rank in classic search, and for most businesses a big share of traffic still comes from there, backlinks are not optional. They are foundational.

For AI answers, the mechanics are different

This is where the "links are dead" crowd has half a point. Research into how AI systems choose which sources to cite found they lean more on clearly stated, extractable claims and the overall authority and reputation of a source than on a raw backlink count. An LLM is not crawling your link graph in the moment it answers. It is drawing on what it learned and what it retrieves, and your link profile influences that indirectly, by shaping how visible and well-regarded you are, rather than as a number it reads off a scoreboard.

The honest synthesis

Backlinks are not dead. They are one layer of a bigger authority picture. For Google, they are still central. For AI, they contribute indirectly, a well-linked, well-regarded source tends to be well-represented in what models learn and retrieve, but they now share the stage with brand mentions and clear, quotable content. The goal quietly moved from "acquire links" to "become an authority," and links are one of the strongest ways to get there, not the whole of it.

The trap to avoid

The worst thing you can do with "AI does not need links" is treat it as permission to cut corners, buy cheap links, or spam. If anything, the bar went up. The links worth having are the ones that also signal genuine authority: relevant, editorial, from sources people and machines already trust. Volume for its own sake was always weak. Now it is weak and pointless.

So, do backlinks still matter? Yes. They are just no longer the entire answer. Build them as part of earning real authority, not as a substitute for it, and you are working with where search is going instead of arguing with it.

The links I build to earn that authority are documented in my case studies.
