AI Overviews and the click decline: what the data really shows

By John Masajo · Published June 18, 2026 · 4 min read

The scariest chart in SEO this year is the one where rankings hold steady but clicks slide down and to the right. AI Overviews are the reason, and the data is finally detailed enough to act on instead of panic over. The short version: the click did not disappear. It moved.

The numbers everyone quotes

AI Overviews now appear on roughly half of all searches, up sharply from about a third a year earlier. When one appears, the top organic result loses close to a fifth of its clicks. And in Google's AI Mode, the more conversational surface, the large majority of sessions end without a click to any website at all. Taken alone, those figures read like the end of search traffic.

The half of the data that gets left out

Here is the part that changes the strategy. Pages that get cited inside an AI Overview see a meaningful lift in clicks, on the order of a third more than the same page would earn from an ordinary listing. The clicks did not evaporate. They concentrated on whoever the AI chose to quote. Being on page one but absent from the AI answer has become the new page two.

The reframe

The goal shifted from "rank number one and capture the click" to "be the source the answer is built from." That rewards a specific set of things: claims stated clearly enough for a machine to lift, genuine authority, since the research on AI source selection shows these systems favor well-regarded sources, and being mentioned and linked across the trusted third-party sites AI leans on. That last one is off-page work, which is a big reason I think off-page skills got more valuable this year, not less.

How to measure success now

Stop judging performance on clicks alone, because the funnel changed shape. Four things worth watching instead. Whether your brand actually appears when you ask AI tools a relevant question, the real outcome you are chasing. Impressions inside AI Overviews, which Google Search Console now reports separately. Branded search and direct traffic, the fingerprint of people who saw you in an answer and came back deliberately. And assisted conversions, which catch the visits a last-click view misses. A traffic dip sitting next to rising impressions and citations is not a failure. It is what the new funnel looks like.

The honest caveat

Some queries genuinely lose the click for good, because the answer is complete inside the overview and the user never needed to leave. For those, the win is the brand impression, not the visit. Accept that, and put your effort into the queries where a click is still realistically on the table, and into being the cited source everywhere else.

AI Overviews did not kill the click. They redistributed it to the cited source and changed the scoreboard. Measure the new scoreboard, aim to be the source rather than just the ranking, and the chart stops being scary and starts being a map.

Being the cited source comes down to authority and trust. More in E-E-A-T in the AI era.
